How to Evaluate the Beauty and Quality of a Tahitian Pearl?
4 Juin 2025
Tahiti pearls, renowned for their captivating beauty and exotic hues, are coveted gems in the world of jewellery.
To assess their quality and value, several essential criteria are taken into account.
Lustre: Lustre refers to the shine and light reflection on the pearl's surface. It is determined by the quality and thickness of the nacre layer. The more intense the lustre, the higher the pearl is considered in quality. A high lustre indicates a thick and well-formed nacre, reflecting light in a bright and sharp manner.
Surface: The surface condition is assessed based on visible imperfections such as pits, scratches, streaks, or depressions. An almost perfect surface, with few or no blemishes, increases the pearl's value. Superior quality Tahiti pearls exhibit a smooth surface without major flaws.
Shape: Tahiti pearls come in various shapes:
- Round: The most sought-after and rare, perfectly spherical.
- Semi-round: Slightly oval or flattened.
- Baroque: Irregular shapes, offering unique charm.
Perfectly round Tahiti pearls are the most desired and thus the most valuable.
Size: The diameter of Tahiti pearls generally ranges from 8 to 16 mm. The larger the pearl, the rarer and more valuable it is. The size is measured in millimetres, and a large-diameter pearl with high quality is particularly prized.
Colour: Tahiti pearls offer a colour palette ranging from light grey to deep black, with shades of green, blue, pink, gold, copper, or aubergine. Colour is a subjective criterion, but some rare hues, like "peacock," are particularly sought-after.
Classification Systems: Two main classification systems are used to evaluate Tahiti pearls:
- Polynesian System: Classifies pearls from A to D, with A representing the highest quality featuring a perfect or nearly perfect surface.
- GIA System (Gemological Institute of America): Uses a scale from AAA to A, with AAA being the highest quality featuring a smooth surface and intense lustre.
The evaluation of a Tahiti pearl is based on a combination of these criteria.
A large-size, perfectly round pearl with high lustre, an unblemished surface, and a rare colour will be considered exceptional.
