How the Tahitian Pearl is Formed
How the Tahitian Pearl is Formed

The culture of the Tahiti pearl, this captivating jewel of the ocean, is a delicate alchemy between nature and human expertise, a fascinating process that we at Poemotu deeply cherish and respect. Here is a glimpse into the extraordinary journey of the Tahiti pearl, from the crystal-clear waters of French Polynesia to its transformation into exquisite jewellery pieces such as men's Tahiti pearl bracelets, Tiki pendants, the timeless Tahiti pearl earrings, and also pearl necklaces.
- Selection of the Pinctada Margaritifera pearl oyster: the journey begins with the careful selection of the black pearl oyster, renowned for its ability to produce magnificent coloured pearls, often called the black pearl. The Tahiti cultured oyster pearl is available in a broad range of colours, including peacock-coloured pearl, grey-coloured pearl, and some 300 other radiant shades. These pearl oysters are chosen for their health and their potential to produce beautiful Tahiti pearls.
- Grafting: a nucleus, often a small pearl of nacre (aragonite) serving as the base for the formation of the pearl, and a piece of another pearl oyster, the donor nacre with its highly iridescent interior promising a potentially magnificent pearl colour, are carefully inserted into the oyster. This delicate process is carried out by experienced grafters, who ensure that the oyster remains alive and healthy, thereby facilitating both the pearl's formation and the oyster's preservation.
- Farming in the lagoon: after grafting, the pearl oysters are placed in baskets in the sea, in the pure and protected waters of French Polynesia's lagoons. There, they benefit from a rich ecosystem that is essential for the development of the Tahiti pearl. During this period, which can last 18 to 24 months, the oysters are regularly cleaned and monitored to ensure their wellbeing and the quality of the cultured pearls in formation.
- Harvesting: the pinnacle of the process is the harvest, a moment filled with anticipation and excitement. Each pearl oyster is carefully opened to reveal the pearl it has created. It is a moment of truth where the size, quality, colour, and lustre of each pearl are discovered, attributes that will define its value.
- Selection and classification of the Tahiti pearl: the harvested pearls are then carefully examined, classified according to their quality, size, shape, and colour. This rigorous classification ensures that only the best pearls are chosen to become, among others, men's Tahiti pearl bracelets, cultured pearl pendants, or integrated into exceptional pearl necklaces.
- Creation of Tahiti pearl jewellery: finally, the pearls of this incredible culture are selected and transformed into magnificent pieces of jewellery. At Poemotu, each Tahiti pearl is meticulously set onto earrings, bracelets, Tiki pendants, manta ray pendants, or necklaces (non-exhaustive list!), creating unique jewellery that captivates and fascinates.
