How are Tahitian Pearls Sorted after Harvesting?

Sorting Pearls: The Art of Enhancing a Harvest at Poemotu

At Poemotu, each Tahitian pearl harvest tells its own story. Unlike jewellers who select only specific pieces, we purchase entire harvests directly from producers to maintain the authenticity and diversity of the pearls.

What happens once the precious cargo is received?

The sorting begins, a meticulous task where every Tahitian pearl is scrutinised with great care to reveal its fullest potential.

1. Matching: Finding the Perfect Balance

Among all the pearls from a harvest, some seem naturally made to be paired. However, finding two perfectly matching Tahitian pearls is a real challenge, as every pearl is unique. At Poemotu, matching is a crucial stage of sorting. We have made this art a signature because we know that Tahitian pearl earrings are among the most demanding jewellery to create.

a - The Demand for Matching: A Pursuit of Perfection

For a pair of pearls to be harmonious, we analyse several criteria:

Shape: Although most earrings are made with round pearls, we also pair semi-baroque or circled pearls for original creations.

Diameter: The human eye is very sensitive to size differences. A variation of 0.1 mm can ruin the balance of a pair. That’s why we measure each pearl to a tenth of a millimetre before matching.

Lustre: Two pearls must reflect light identically. Stronger lustre on one pearl would make the pair look imbalanced.

Colour and Overtones: Some pearls have similar shades forming a tone-on-tone pair, perfect for a classic and elegant finish. Others play with contrasts, having slightly different overtones that complement without competing.

Orientation of Pearls: A Tahitian pearl may appear perfectly matched to another, but once set into an earring, if its overtones or shape are oriented differently, the pair can seem asymmetrical. That’s why we always observe pearls from various angles before confirming a duo.

The goal? To create perfect symmetry once worn, allowing both pearls to reveal their complete beauty together.

b - The Art of Finding Two Soulmates

Matching is a task of patience and precision. Imagine a table covered with hundreds of pearls, all from the same harvest, and having to pick those that will make an ideal duo.

Some statistics for better understanding: On average, only 15 to 20% of pearls from a harvest find a twin to become a pair. The sorting can take several days because some pearls only find their match as the selection progresses. The larger the diameter, the more challenging the matching becomes, as rare pearls over 11 mm each have unique overtones and characteristics.

c - Unique Earrings: The Poemotu Expertise

Once pairs are found, we make adjustments to ensure perfect harmony:

Fixing Verification: Each pearl must be mounted on a setting that respects its balance and orientation.

Final Check Under Various Lightings: A pearl may seem perfectly matched under white light but slightly different under natural light. We test our pairs in multiple conditions to ensure absolute visual consistency. Some pairs are set on 18-carat gold studs for classic stud earrings, while others are destined for sleepers or hoops, offering a subtle and timeless elegance.

d - Poemotu and Matching: A Signature of Excellence

Unlike traditional jewellers that purchase already matched pearls from wholesalers, Poemotu conducts all matching in-house with meticulous care to ensure perfectly balanced and unique earrings.

Every pair of pearls is chosen with precision, not only for their resemblance but also for the magic they exude when together. Finding two pearls meant for each other is an art... and it’s the entire expertise of Poemotu.

2. Colour Associations: The Art of Composition

Once pearls are paired for earrings, those that don’t find their perfect twin aren’t set aside. Quite the contrary, they become the main actors of unique compositions where the natural nuances of Tahitian pearls play together to create exceptional jewellery. At Poemotu, we pay special attention to colour associations as every pearl narrates a story, and their interaction creates a fascinating harmony.

a - The Association of Shades: A Poemotu Signature

The world of Tahitian pearls is rich in hues: from silvery grey to intense greens, deep blues, and golden overtones. This diversity allows us to create duos and trios of pearls that don’t look alike but enhance each other.

Some of the combinations we love to create:

The Contrasting Duo: A light grey pearl paired with a dark-reflecting peacock pearl for a striking contrast jewellery piece.

The Oceanic Harmony: A gradation of greens and blues, echoing the lagoon's reflections under the sun.

The Golden Alliance: A champagne-hued pearl mixed with a more coppery one for a bright and warm composition.

The Timeless You and Me: Two pearls with complementary shades, embodying perfect union and duality.

These colour plays give birth to unique jewellery where each pearl keeps its identity while creating a striking visual balance.

b - The Art of You and Me: Two Pearls, One Story

The concept of You and Me, popularised in jewellery by icons such as Napoleon and Josephine, finds particular resonance in our Tahitian pearl creations.

Why pair two pearls rather than leave them alone?

Create Contrast: Playing on differences in hue or size brings a fascinating visual dynamic.

Tell a Story: Two pearls together can symbolise union, balance, complementarity.

Add Depth to a Piece: Far from being monotonous, these pairings offer unique depth to a pendant, ring, or bracelet. We work with an expert eye, testing different combinations before confirming those that enhance each pearl's natural beauty.

c - Multi-Pearl Creations: Celebrating Diversity

When we have pearls with subtly varying shapes and colours, we give them a second life in daring compositions.

d - Some Key Pieces from This Selection:

Multi-Pearl Bracelets: Where each pearl is chosen for its radiance and harmony with the others.

Duet or Trio Pendants: A cascade of pearls where hues gently echo each other.

Gradient Necklaces: A gradual shift in tones for a smooth and elegant transition.

Each pearl combination is designed like a work of art, where colours blend like an impressionist painting, capturing light and shades with every movement.

3. Selecting Solitaires: Individual Excellence

Some pearls, too exceptional to be matched or paired, are reserved to be mounted alone, as pendants or rings. These are pearls that stand alone for their :

A rare and deep colour

✔ An hypnotic, almost mirror-like lustre

✔ A perfect and balanced shape

These pearls are the ones that leave a mark, treasures of nature that become centrepieces in a collection.

4. The Destination of Uniquely Shaped Pearls

Baroque or circled pearls, with their irregular curves, also find their place. At Poemotu, we consider them true natural artworks, and we use them for unique and bold creations, where each pearl becomes the focal point of a piece full of character. Some will be mounted on:

✔ Bohemian and refined style bracelets

✔ Pendants where their silhouette tells a story

✔ Custom pieces for those seeking an extraordinary pearl

5. The Final Check: Ensuring Excellence

Before transforming pearls into jewellery, a final quality check is conducted. It ensures that each pearl perfectly suits its intended use and reveals all its brilliance once worn. Once pearls are sorted by their use – matched for earrings, selected for solitaires, or paired by hues for unique creations – the critical stage of final verification begins.

At Poemotu, this phase is crucial to ensure that every chosen pearl meets the highest standards and perfectly corresponds to its future jewellery piece.

a - Quality and Characteristic Check

Every pearl is re-examined under specific light and from different angles to assess :

Its lustre: The radiance must meet the given classification (AAA, AA, etc.). A mirror-like pearl enhances a pendant or a solitaire ring even more.

Its colour uniformity: Some pearls may slightly evolve over time, so it is essential to check their colour remains stable and harmonious with other pearls in their selection.

Its integrity: A pearl must be perfectly suited for its setting. It is observed with the naked eye and under a magnifying glass to spot any imperfections that might affect its appearance once mounted on jewellery.

b - Adapting to the Final Jewellery Piece: An Essential Step

After this verification, we test each cultured pearl in its future role:

Earrings: We re-check that the two matched pearls remain in perfect harmony once mounted on their gold or silver posts.

Pendants and Solitaire Rings: We ensure the pearl, according to its drilling axis, reveals its best face when worn.

Multi-Pearl Creations: We examine the ensemble to guarantee the harmony of hues and shapes is optimal.

Fixing and Durability Tests

Once pearls are validated for their usage, we ensure they are mounted with precision: The drilling must be perfectly centred and suited to the type of setting (ear studs, bails, settings). The fastening systems are tested to ensure secure and lasting hold. Pearls destined for bracelets are tested to ensure they endure wrist movements without loosening risks.

One last look before their journey to you

Finally, before being shipped, jewellery-mounted pearls are given a final clean and placed in their case. We strive to make each jewellery piece an unforgettable experience from the moment of unboxing.

Poemotu, a Commitment to Authenticity and Excellence

Thanks to this meticulous sorting, each pearl finds its rightful place and ideal setting. This attention to detail preserves the soul of each pearl, which is what makes the difference between a simple pearl and a piece of jewellery filled with history and emotion.

The art of pairing pearls is more than just sorting: it's a subtle language that gives a soul to each piece of jewellery.

And you, which pearl will capture your heart?
