Let's dive into the power of words that sing the Pacific, sculpt gestures, and inspire the creation of Poemotu.

The Polynesian language is much more than a means of communication: it is a way of living, feeling, and transmitting. Each word carries a vibration, a breath, a memory. Through them, the connection to the land, the ocean, the ancestors, and the invisible is gracefully woven.

At Poemotu, where the pearl is sacred, these words resonate like poetic compasses. They remind us that beauty goes far beyond appearance: it is relationship, intention, and presence.

1. Mana – The energy of life

Pronunciation: mah-nah Meaning: spiritual force, invisible power, sacred energy.

What it means: Mana flows through everything that exists: living beings, objects, places. A person, a pearl, a gesture or a piece of jewellery is said to have mana when it exudes a natural, magnetic and deeply true power.

At Poemotu, we select Tahitian pearls with this invisible requirement: that of mana, something that cannot be explained but is felt.

2. Va’a – The path on water

Pronunciation: vah-ah Meaning: traditional outrigger canoe.

What it means: The va’a is the art of navigating between islands, carried by the swell and the stars. It is also a symbol of humility and resilience: knowing how to move forward, sometimes alone, sometimes as a team, always in the right effort. A pearl mounted on a necklace Poemotu is a miniature va’a: a path traced between sky, sea and heart.

3. Ori Tahiti – Dance as language

Pronunciation: oh-ree tah-ee-tee Meaning: traditional Tahitian dance.

What it means: Ori Tahiti is not only an artistic performance: it is a story in motion. Each gesture has a meaning: the sea, love, rain, memory... The body becomes narrative, memory and offering.

Wearing a Poemotu jewel is to dance differently: let the pearls tell what words cannot say.

4. Heiva – Celebration of roots

Pronunciation: Hey-va - Meaning: traditional festivities held every July in Tahiti.

What it means: The Heiva brings communities together around dance, song, va’a, sport, tattooing… It is a hymn to a living, rooted and joyful culture.

At Poemotu, each piece is a celebration of this generous culture, transmitted with respect for craftsmanship.

5. Fenua – The land, the cradle

Pronunciation: feh-noua - Meaning: territory, island, native land, homeland.

What it means: The fenua is the mother land, the one we protect, we love, that we never own but that shapes us.

Our Tahitian pearl jewellery respects this idea of a connection to nature: responsible packaging, reasoned quantities, creations in harmony with life.

 6. Moana – The inner ocean

Meaning: the ocean, the sea, the deep blue.

What it means: The moana is more than a setting: it is an entity in its own right, a nourishing breath, a mirror of our emotions.

Tahitian pearls are born from this moana: each reflection, each colour tells a variation of water, salt, and time.

7. Tatau – Marking your truth

Pronunciation: Ta-Taou - Meaning: traditional Polynesian tattooing.

What it means: The tatau tells who you are: your ancestors, your values, your choices. It is a sacred, visible, indelible inscription.

At Poemotu, each jewel can be seen as a discreet tatau: it subtly says something about you.

8. Ia Ora Na & Māuruuru – Heartfelt words

Meaning: “Hello” and “Thank you” What it means: The Tahitian language gives immense importance to kindness. Saying Ia ora na is to wish life. Saying Māuruuru (pronounced Mao-rou-rou) is to honour the exchange.

Offering a pearl or a jewel from Poemotu is to say both: I see you, I thank you.

9. Aito – The tree and the warrior

Pronunciation: a-i-to - Meaning: “the valiant”, but also a sacred wood used for paddles.

What it means: Aito embodies the spirit of the calm warrior. The one who moves forward, with integrity, without seeking to dominate. Many of our masculine creations draw from this silent strength, blending power with restraint.

Poemotu: where words become jewels

Wearing a Poemotu jewel (pronounced poé-motou) is not just about choosing a rare pearl. It is about entering a story, a breath, an insular memory. Each jewel evokes a word: the mana of an intense pearl, the moana of a necklace in motion, the va’a of a personal journey. We believe that words can accompany gestures and that beauty is a universal language.

How to integrate this wisdom daily?

Choose a jewel full of meaning, for yourself or as a gift with intention. Take a few seconds each day to say māuruuru to what surrounds us. Respect what is unseen: the craftsman, the lagoon, the silence beneath the surface. Walk with the rhythm of the elements, like a paddle gliding on water.

Polynesian words are not just pretty: they are compasses. They illuminate essential values in a world searching for guidance. By making them resonate in our creations, Poemotu connects the sea, art, and soul.

Ia ora na e māuruuru. May each pearl you wear connect you to the breath of the Pacific.
