Manta Ray: meaning, habitat, species and why it inspires jewellery
04 October 2025
1- Where can one find the manta ray?
The manta rays (genus Mobula, formerly Manta) inhabit the tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate waters of all major oceans.
- Mobula birostris, the oceanic manta ray, has a circumtropical distribution, found in the Pacific (Ecuador, Mexico, Indonesia, Thailand, the Maldives...), the Atlantic Ocean, and the Indian Ocean.
- Mobula alfredi, the reef manta ray, prefers coastal waters and often lingers near islands, with smaller migrations compared to birostris.
The Pacific Ocean, especially its warm, plankton-rich areas, provides an ideal habitat for manta rays, except during winter months when some populations migrate to deeper or more tropical waters.
2. Other species of rays around the world
The term "ray" encompasses over 500–600 species across 24 families. Among them:
- Stingrays (Dasyatidae), such as the whiptail stingray or freshwater rays.
- Eagle rays (Myliobatidae), including the common eagle ray (Myliobatis aquila) or the ornate eagle ray (Aetomylaeus vespertilio).
- Blue-spotted ribbontail rays (Taeniura lymma) living on Indo-Pacific reefs.
- And of course, the manta rays, the largest in the group, with birostris reaching up to 7 m in wingspan and alfredi reaching 5.5 m.
3. Conservation status & threats
Both species of manta rays are classified as vulnerable (alfredi) and endangered (birostris) by the IUCN. Their long lifespan (up to 50 years) and low fecundity make them particularly vulnerable to human pressures.
Main threats:
- Overfishing: targeted for gill sale in traditional Chinese medicine.
- Bycatch in industrial nets → suffocation.
Pollution: bioaccumulated microplastics and heavy metals pose health risks to rays and humans.
- Climate change: warming causes food and reproduction disturbances (observations of beached Mediterranean devil rays).
- Unregulated tourist activities, collisions with boats, or biological disruptions.
4. Why is the manta ray a powerful symbol?
a. Intelligence, grace, harmony
- Mantas have the largest relative brain among fish and can pass the mirror test.
- They symbolise grace, emotional depth, intelligence, and the ability to follow life's natural flow.
b. Mythology and spirituality
- In Hawaii, known as "Hahalua" ("two breaths"), the manta is a guardian of the ocean, bearer of good fortune, healing, strength, and protection.
- In spiritual & shamanic beliefs, the manta embodies creativity, flexibility, perspective, and wisdom.
5. The manta ray in jewellery: a mixed choice
Why men & women embrace it
- Unisex jewellery (pendants, bracelets, earrings) inspired by its distinctive wing, suits a unisex style.
- Adopted symbols: freedom, harmony, inner strength, protection – appealing to a broad audience.

- Precious metals: gold, silver, sometimes set with diamonds.
- Designs highlighting the elegant, symmetrical silhouette of mantas — wings spread, sometimes intertwined, in polished or gilt silver.
